Spring is finally here! It’s the perfect time to refresh your home and overhaul your cleaning routine. Professor Pig has a few tips to help you save money while taking care of household tasks.
Mix it Up
Specialized cleaning products designed for every task can dissolve your budget. Buying store brands is a great way to save, or better yet, make your cleaning products with natural ingredients like lemon, vinegar, baking soda, and salt! One robust cleaner can do the heavy lifting of multiple specialized products.
No More Dishpan Hands
Dishwashers are more efficient than you think! Running the faucet while hand washing dishes can use up to 20 gallons of water, while the dishwasher uses as little as 4 gallons. For the most efficiency, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for loading and maximizing space within the washer.
Ditch the Disposables
There are so many gadgets on the market promising to make cleaning faster and easier. Truthfully, most just add to our landfills. Instead of choosing single-use dusters and mop pads, upcycle old t-shirts into dust rags and invest in washable microfiber mop heads. They clean just as well, if not better, and afterward, you can just toss them in with the laundry! Swap paper towels for newspaper when cleaning windows and glass, and keep an old toothbrush on hand for hard-to-reach areas around the sink and tub.
Love Your Laundry
Unless an item is stained, consider wearing clothes (think jeans, sweaters, and pajamas) more than once. Washing less often conserves both money and energy and can extend the life of your garment!
Ensure you are using the recommended amount of detergent. If you see suds during the wash, you are using too much soap, which can build up and damage clothes. Hot water doesn’t always clean better. Instead, it can cause stains to set or even damage some fabrics. Modern detergents work just as well in cooler water which also conserves energy! Finally, swap chemically scented dryer sheets for eco-friendly wool dryer balls and try running the dryer in the morning during summer months and evening during winter months to take advantage of off-peak rates from your electric company.
Appliances That Sparkle
A clean refrigerator makes everyone’s day better! Keep yours sparkling by using a spray bottle filled with equal parts water and vinegar to clean up spills as they happen. Prevent lingering odors in the dishwasher by running a cycle with a dishwasher-safe cup of vinegar on the top rack. Heating a bowl of water in the microwave helps loosen baked-on spills and makes them easy to wipe away. Shine the front of stainless appliances by adding a few drops of lemon oil to a soft cloth.
This spring, keep your home looking great and extra money in your pocket!
